Uses of Manual Block Signaling

Manual block can also serve as a backup system when automatic signaling equipment fails or is removed from service for maintenance or testing. During these situations, train movements continue safely under the authority of block operators.

Special operating conditions may also require manual block procedures. Examples include track maintenance activities, reverse train movements, or unusual train operations outside normal traffic patterns.

One advantage of manual block signaling is that it can provide a simpler and more cost-effective method of train control for low-density rail lines where installing complex automatic systems may not be practical.
